Transition/Career/Post-Secondary Planning
Transition/Career/Post-Secondary Planning
High school goal setting and post-graduate planning are critical components of the school counseling program. The School Counseling Department collaborates with all students and families to guide students towards individualized post-secondary paths, including higher education, Armed Services, gap years, internships and work force and more. From college admissions testing, such as the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), American College Testing (ACT), to the Advanced Placement program sponsored by the College Board, the counseling department provides students with the information needed to implement a college testing plan tailored for them.
Each year, the department hosts college admissions officers and military representatives who meet with prospective students in small groups. Counselors deliver post-secondary planning and college application workshops to both students and families, as well as financial aid education and scholarship opportunities. Students have access to a college & career planning platform to support post-secondary and vocational education. The department also administers the Armed Services Vocational Battery Assessment (ASVAB) to interested 10-12 grade students yearly.
All SHS students have access to MEFA Pathway, a free on-line career exploration program that enables students to “develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes and skills to create a meaningful path to be ready for college and career.” Students can explore interests, individual strengths and challenges, and careers that align with their interests and strengths. Students can use this knowledge when planning for their high school courses and when making postsecondary plans.
SCOIR (pronounced SCORE) is our online college planning and application system to help students navigate the college selection and application process. Students are given accounts at the beginning of their junior year and may invite parents/caregivers to link to their accounts. Parents/caregivers may view their student profiles, review their college lists, conduct their own college searches, and suggest colleges for your student to consider. SCOIR also provides parents/caregivers with financial tools to get a better sense of the cost of attendance at various colleges during the selection process. In addition, SCOIR has a mobile application feature for download.
